PoP SpotlighT - W a y n A

I met Wayna last year when she was doing an appearance at FYE in Westfield Wheaton Mall. I was immediately taken by her warm spirit and gracious nature, but even more impressed when I purchased her CD and listened to her thoughtful lyrics and beautiful voice. This woman has undeniable talent and incredible appeal that should not be overlooked.

With the storytelling and wordplay of Jill Scott to a voice that is at once familiar and fresh, she calls to mind the greats of yesteryear, as if she is channelling the spirits of Billie Holliday, Dinah Washington and other ladies of the day, while mixing in bits of Badu, the aforementioned Jill Scott, a taste of Lauren Hill, and the originality of Wayna herself.

As a lyricist, I am most drawn to words that are crafted to tell a story or have bits of metaphor, and one of my favorite tracks from her first CD was Mama's Sacrifice. On her lastest CD, I fell in love with the heartbreaking tale of domestic violence "My Love". (See performance below from the 930 club in Washington, DC).

Wayna is one to watch, as well as listen to, and was nominated for a Grammy at this years ceremony. She will be performing soon at Blues Alley in Georgetown. See her live - you won't be disappointed.

Wayna can be found on MySpace Music and Facebook or at her official website
Her CD's Moments of Clarity Book 1 & Higher Ground are available on iTunes and
You can see more Wayna videos at YouTube, including the new video for her single, My Love.
